Partner 3. Departamento de Ingenieria Hidraulica y Medio Ambiente, Universidad Politecnica de Valencia (UPV), Spain.

The Departamento de Ingeniería Hidráulica y Medio Ambiente (Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering Department) of UPV has being developing its own methodologies for modelling the components of water resources systems during the last two decades. This includes groundwater models, and also models for the planning and management of complex systems including multiple surface reservoirs and aquifers, as well as different types of water users. This experience has been gained through many conjunctive projects and exchanges with European and North American universities and other research entities. Further, the experience has also been gained through the practical application of the developments to real world problems in agencies in charge of the planning and management of water resources management in Spain and abroad. Moreover, consulting firms working in the field rely on UPV technologies for water resources systems modelling. The synopsis of the yields of the research and development work is included in AQUATOOL, a generalised decision support system for water resources systems planning and management, which includes basin optimization modules, basin simulation modules and aquifer modeling modules.

The team at UPV has worked on several EEC projects including:

-          Optimal Management of Surface and Underground Reservoirs (Conjunctive Use) for Irrigation. EEC Science and Technology for Development (STD2) programme.

-          HYRIGE - Hydraulique Rizicole, Gestión des resources en Eau et des écosystèmes. Comunidades Europeas. EEC COMMET programme.

-          WARSYP: Water Resources Systems Planning. EEC Environment and Climate Programme (DG-12)

Leader of the UPV group will be Prof. Joaquin Andreu. Full Professor of Water Resources at the Department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering of the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, has authored several publications related to Water Resources Planning and Management, Decision Support Systems Applied to Water Resources, Mathematical Modeling, Conjunctive Use of Surface and Ground Waters, and Systems Analysis.
